Guiding Principles and Rules

GOVERNING PRINCIPLES

The Southern Texas Roost of Hospitality is guided by the following core principles:

  1. Keep the main thing the main thing
    1. We value charitable giving, and the hang-out, as much as we value the golf
  2. All are welcome
    1. Come out and play. Seriously. Bring your friends, too.
  3. Don’t be a jerk
    1. Assume good intent in all interactions
  4. Competition is important
    1. We keep score. “Count shots, hit cups.”

ROOST GOALS

The ultimate point of the Roost construct is to identify a team of 4 golfers to compete in the Texhoma Roost Regional against the Big Plex (DFW Roost) and Supercell (Oklahoma Roost) teams for a place in the NLU Roost Championship. By competing in Roost events, players are committing to the qualifiers and possibly national tournaments in the latter half of the year.

Our goal is to provide a few interesting competition scenarios specifically designed to help us all meet more of our Roost counterparts, and clearly and cleanly select our four competitors. Regional captains are encouraged to put on ‘social’ Roost tournament outings locally.

We are hoping to keep costs low for each tournament, but prizes are fun and sometimes there are course fees for reserving enough spots for our group. Also for some of the larger events, we’ll want to do merch (stickers, koozies). The competition committee will transparently communicate fees for each tournament should they arise.

Proposed STROHs qualifiers

  1. Match Play Winner
  2. Muni Tour Regular Season Points Leader
  3. Muni Tour Championship winner (or next highest player not already qualified)
  4. Sixers on Ice Winner

Proposed Alternates Order of selection

  1. Match Play runner up
  2. Match Play consolation match winner
  3. Sixers on Ice runner-up – OR – Muni Tour Season runner-up
  4. Sixers on Ice runner-up – OR – Muni Tour Season runner-up
  5. Next highest ranking person not already qualified on the Muni Tour Season standings will fill out any remaining needed alternates

TOURNAMENT SPECIFICS

Each of us can go to our local city golf tournament schedule and find one-day and two-day stroke play tournaments. Strohs, as outlined above, is more about #gettinginvolved and enjoying the game, and less about grinding on two-footers for double.  As such, we will prioritize fun courses, fun formats, and fun side games over pure stroke-play competition.

General Competition Notes

  • Teebox Guidance
    • Handicaps 10.0 and lower will make the best effort to play from tees targeting >6600 yards.
    • Handicaps 10.1 and higher will play from tees targeting <6600 yards.
    • Women and those aged 60+ will play from tees targeting 5500-6200 yards.
  • Most STROHs events will be NET events
    • Match play handicaps will be calculated day of the match, based on the tees selected by players (split tees OK too)
    • Stroke play tournaments will have handicaps calculated 24 hours before the event by the competition committee, based on assigned tees (see above)
    • The Muni Tour Championship will count GROSS scores during play, but quotas will be set based on your handicap 24 hours before the Day 1 match.
  • Hit cups and count all shots. No mulligans, no gimmes except match play.
  • All stroke-play events have a 9-shot maximum score (modeled after the Texas UIL golf rules).
  • USGA rules govern play. Local course rules overrule USGA rules, and should there be a tournament-specific STROHs rule, those overrule local course rules.

Match Play

Competition Details

In the 2023-2024 season, we will compete in an open-season player pool in lieu of past years’ regional pod play prior to bracket play. In addition to traditional singles matches, the match play championship will also be open to Fourball (best ball) matches prior to bracket play. All matches played will earn points. The top 12-point earners in the match-play pool during the open season will be seeded for bracket play in late spring.

Points Breakdown:

2 points for playing

2 additional (kicker) points to players for any match victory

1 point to players halving (tied) their match

The only stipulation: No Replays of matches.

One and Done.

The winner of bracket play will be crowned champion of the Stroh’s 2024 Match Play Championship and earns a coveted spot on the Strohs Roost Regional team competing against “The Plex” (DFW/North Texas Roost) and the “Super Cell” (Oklahoma) Roost. The 2024 R6 Roost Regional will be hosted by the Plex Roost (July 2024, Venue: TBD). The runner-up of the match play championship will be an automatic 1st alternate on the Roost Regional Team.

Requirements for posting an official Match Play round are:

  • Schedule your match directly with your opponent
  • Follow all the Rules of Golf for Match Play during the round (no mulligans, etc)
  • Report the winner, margin of victory, course, and tees played, and handicaps from that day to the Scoring Committee
    • Use the Google form designed by @SaveMuny
  • Send a Picture of a signed scorecard and an additional pic with you and the other refugees (with names and handles please)
    • Content is king! – goes on message boards, Instagrams, and websites.

Muni Tour

Competition Details

The Stroh’s Muni Tour is a way to celebrate the strong municipal golf scene that exists throughout Texas, and not just in the major metro areas. The Tour will run from August until April, with participants able to play rounds with other Refugees at their leisure at a select set of municipal golf courses throughout South and Central Texas. Points will be awarded based on performance from all players at each course throughout the Tour timeline. The Muni Tour Championship (MTC) will be played at a notable municipal course in a handicapped format similar to the PGA Tour Championship, and the winner of the MTC will be one of the four qualifiers from the STROHs Roost to the larger regional qualifying tournament. Course list, scoring method, MTC format, and rules of competition are below.

The Muni Tour will also crown two of the STROH’s four Roost qualifiers. The regular season points champion will secure one spot, and the MTC champion will secure one spot. If the MTC champion is also the regular season champion, the second-place finisher in the MTC will take the spot. All ties will be broken by sudden-death playoff, on whatever hole the course will let us use. If they don’t let us use a hole, we can do the dreaded scorecard playoff, or a hometown chip/pitch off.

Scoring

There will be a running scoreboard for each course. STROH members can post one score per course on the Tour. That is, you can post a score at one or more of the courses on the Muni Tour roster. A player must declare their intent to post the score before the first tee shot is played, and only one score may be posted for the purposes of the Muni Tour. If weather or other act of god causes the suspension or cancelation of a declared round before the round is finished, the player will be allowed to resume the round that day, or fully restart the round on another day. If the course allows players back out, and the player decides to resume their round, that round counts for the muni tour, but the player is not required to resume their round just because the course is allowing players back on (i.e. the time delay lasts too long and player has other commitments).

At the end of the season, we’ll award points to the top 10 scorers at each course. First place at a course will earn 10 points, down to 1 point for tenth place. Additionally, anybody who posts a round at a course will receive a point.

**2023/2024 SEASON**

In the 2022/2023 season, we took the best 4 scores out of a possible 6. This year, 2023/2024, we will be taking your best 5 scores out of a possible 9.

The committee is planning to host one meet-up days in each metro area during the season. Specific dates will come soon so watch this space for more information. These meetups will serve as an opportunity to knock out rounds with your fellow STROHs and accumulate points for the MuniTour ™. Think of these as our “Designated Events”.

  • Austin Meetup – Fall 2023
  • San Antonio Meetup – Late February 2024
  • Houston “Space City Slam” – May 2024

With the implementation of “Designated Events” and to encourage participation in them we will be slightly changing the handicapping structure of the MuniTour ™. All regular MuniTour ™ rounds will be played at 80% of course handicap. All rounds played during the “Designated Events” will be played at 100% of course handicap.

The final change to the format will come in the way of mulligan rounds. The committee understands that having to choose when your game is in good shape to play MuniTour ™ rounds can be difficult. If you are unhappy with your original score you are welcome to play as many additional rounds as you would like. Keep in mind that if you take a mulligan (or two) you will accept the mulligan score even if it is worse than your previous round.

The leaderboard for each course, and the overall leaderboard can and will change over time, as more rounds are posted at each course on the Tour. Courses do not have to be played in any specific order.

Requirements for posting an official Muni Tour round are:

  • Play with another Refugee (STROHs member preferred but not required)
  • Follow all the Rules of Golf during the round (no mulligans, no gimmes).
  • Report the GROSS score and your course handicap from that day to the scoring coordinator no later than 24 hours after the completion of your round, and note who you played with.
  • Picture of a signed scorecard and an additional pic with you and the other refugees (with names and handles please)
    • Content is king! – goes on message boards, instagrams, website.

Muni Tour Championship

Muni Tour Championship The Muni Tour Championship is both the culmination of the Muni Tour season, and one of the larger events for the STROHs group. The 2024 MTC will be held at Roy Kizer in Austin Texas. The MTC is modeled after the Tour Championship, the final event of the Fedex Cup for each PGA Tour season. Any player who posts at least one round on the Muni Tour qualifies to play in the MTC. A one-day quota game, the top-ten finishers in the season-long points race, will have a slightly reduced quota on the day of the tournament, to reward their play throughout the season.

Quota relief for the regular season points leaders will be:

  • 1st place – 3 points off quota
  • 2nd place – 2 points off quota
  • 3rd place – 1 point off quota

Quota points each day will be 36, minus your course handicap 1 week prior to the event. A 10.0 course handicap would have a quota of 26 points. A plus handicap would get their course handicap added to 36 (a +1 would have a quota of 37).

Points are awarded for GROSS scores thusly:

  • Albatross = 10
  • Eagle = 8
  • Birdie = 4
  • Par = 2
  • Bogey = 1
  • Double+ = 0

Scoring for the tournament will be tracked as +/- to quota. In the same example from above, our 10.0 course handicap has a quota of 26. If they achieve 28 points on Day 1, they’re +2 for the day.

Sixers on Ice

The Sixers on Ice is a head-to-head match play held at Landa Park in New Braunfels, with each match consisting of a designated six-hole stretch. Participants play three matches per day with a total of six matches being played over two rounds. Scoring:
